Ask for the old paths T. L. Webb Jr

700 Ask for the old paths T. L. Webb, Jr. “Stand ye in the ways and see and ask for the old paths” (Jer. 6:16).

It is true that man by nature is always wanting to try something new. There is a thrill in having a new car, new clothing, a new job, etc. Very little thought is given to the mercy of God which is said to be “new every morning” (Lam. 3:23). The fantasy of experimentation can be very dangerous. “Let’s try something new” can lead to serious trouble sometimes. This is true in the religious circle. The Gospel of Christ is old, but new and refreshing every time it is heard. It is said to be the “old, old story of Jesus and His love.” How many times has it been told, but we still want to hear it again and again! It is never a dangerous message, but the new doctrine invented by men can lead to trouble.

When the attendance at church seems to be on the decline, we might be tempted to say, “Let us see if we can try some new thing to draw a bigger crowd.” This is sometimes done in the form of entertainment which always pleases the worldly minded. The things of the world will draw people of the world. The church is a spiritual institution, separate and apart from the world. The born again child of God has a spiritual soul and with it is a spiritual appetite. There are many children of God who are thirsting for spiritual food and strength from Heaven. We should make every effort to encourage them to turn way from the sinful things of the world and seek the rest and peace that is found in believing in Jesus and walking in the paths He trod.

If the pure, unadulterated gospel of Christ does not draw people to His service, then we need not try anything else. When was the last time you told others about this rest you have found in following the Lord? When was the last time you invited someone to the House of the Lord?

There are many “ways” to travel, but the Prophet Jeremiah said, “Stand ye in the ways and see and ask.” When we have found the “old paths” that Christ and His Apostles and the early church followed, then we are to “walk therein, and ye shall find rest to your souls.” This is said to be the “good way.” But they said, “We will not walk therein.” Are you searching for the simplicity of congregational singing, praying and spirit-filled gospel preaching? Then we invite you to come to the Primitive Baptist Church.
